World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Severe Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Less than one in 10 patients that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy can access them, states the WHO as it releases its first guidance on the medications.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide currently obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The new guidelines recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and ongoing care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to broad availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing significant weight, explains the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Despite the current best projected outlook, the manufacturing of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The advice encourages governments and firms to increase availability, via approaches such as patent sharing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

How Obesity Drugs Operate

The injections imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and increase the sense of being full so people consume fewer calories.

People typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may put most of the weight back on within a year of stopping the treatment, as their typical food cravings come back.

Being overweight or obese elevates your likelihood for contracting medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Obesity impacts individuals in every country and was linked to 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
