The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
