In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
