Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
