Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
