At least thirteen individuals perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
