Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since achieving her goal, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in different industries.
